Welcome to the
NAES COUNSELOR'S CORNER
2017-18
What is a School Counselor?
A certified/licensed, trained, and caring professional who is available to work with all students, parents, teachers, and staff in order to help students achieve academic and social success. As your child’s school counselor, the most important part of our job is to ensure that students are safe and successful at school. We are concerned about his/her emotional well-being, academic progress, and personal/social development. There are various programs and avenues we may use to reach success in these areas. Browse the website to find out more about what this year will bring from the NAES Counseling Department.
How does a School Counselor help?
1. Short-term individual counseling: Typically, we see a student 2-6 times about a particular school related problem. We will coordinate appropriate times with your child’s teacher to pull them for counseling. Further recommendations or referrals may be given as needed.
2. Short-term small group counseling: We facilitate groups on various topics throughout the year. Groups are typically in session for six weeks. Selection of group candidates is determined by staff recommendation, student needs and the needs of their peer group.
3. Classroom guidance lessons: We visit classrooms to deliver lessons for personal/social, academic and career success. Some topics include conflict management, growth mindset, career readiness, and academic success.
4. We will work collaboratively with students, parents, and teachers to help students who may be struggling with academic concerns, behavior, social, emotional, and/or healthy concerns that affect the student's academic performance.
5. We help to coordinate referrals to outside agencies as needed for students and families.
How does a student get to see a School Counselor?
Students can see the Counselor via a self-referral, parental request, and/or teacher or administrative referral.
Sessions may be held on a regular, ongoing basis or simply as needed.
